Hiring Deadlines -2009-2010
Hiring committees who wish to hire Staff employees prior to the New Year must submit their online employment recommendations in e-Hire by Friday, November 13, 2009. This will allow candidates a sufficient amount of time to give two week notices to their employers when accepting positions with ACC. Faculty hiring committees who are hiring for the spring semester must submit their employment recommendations to the Dean by Friday, December 4, 2009.
HR Employment will continue to accept employment recommendations submitted after the previously stated deadlines. Candidates who are unable to begin their employment on the remaining orientation dates of this year will be scheduled for the next available orientation date in 2010.
All employees who are in a paid status by December 7, 2009 will be paid for the Winter Break. Please contact Erica Breedlove at ebreedlo@austincc.edu for more information.
Remaining New Employee Orientation Dates for 2009:

  • Monday, November 2, 2009
  • Monday, November 9, 2009
  • Monday, November 16, 2009
  • Monday, December 7, 2009

Benefits
TexFlex deadline approaching
Don’t forget: Spend your Plan Year ‘09 TexFlex money by November 15!
If you are a TexFlex participant, you have until November 15, 2009 to spend any remaining dollars in your Plan Year 2009 TexFlex accounts. This grace period gives you an additional 2 ½ months beyond the end of the plan year to have eligible expenses.
What does this mean to you? All grace period expenses (with a date of service between September 1, 2009 and November 15, 2009) will be paid out of your “prior” plan year balance, helping you to “use up” the prior plan year balance first. In other words, member claims with a date of service between September 1, 2009 and November 15, 2009 will be applied to your 2009 balance. Once the Plan Year 2009 balance is exhausted, the remaining claims will be applied toward your 2010 election amount.
Remember, TexFlex also features a 120 day run-out period, which allows you to file claims up until December 31. As always, any balance remaining in a 2009 account after December 31 will be forfeited. It is not recommended that you wait until December 31 to file Plan Year 2009 claims, in case corrections need to be made.
If you have any questions regarding this process, contact PayFlex at (866) FlexTex or (866) 353-9839.

The Celebration of Great Teaching is now accepting applications for participants. The format varies but often includes teaching clinics, panels, organized discussions, “hands on” workshops, and presentations by participants. It also features choices among activities. The exchange takes place not only in scheduled sessions but also informally and in conversations. The goals of the seminar include sharing methods and techniques, celebrating good teaching, creative and realistic problem solving, exploration of new ideas, and professional and personal renewal.
The retreat will be held March 26, 27th and 28th, 2010 at the Flying L Guest Ranch in Bandera, Texas.

You will have access to your paycheck through the Employee Online Account. At your own leisure and convenience you can view and print all pay information online (advices/checks stubs).
The link to online services is located at: Online Services. The Pay Advices online have all the information needed for any business transaction requiring an ACC payment status.
If you do not have direct deposit, you will receive your paycheck at the usual paycheck location. We hope you will consider direct deposit and assist the college in its efforts to go Green. You can sign up for direct deposit at: http://www.austincc.edu/hr/payroll/directdeposit.php.

Piper Professor Nominations Due October 2nd
It is time for ACC full-time faculty to choose a nominee for the 2010 Minnie Stevens Piper Professor award, a statewide award for college faculty. The Piper Foundation reviews nominee materials and chooses those who will receive the prestigious award, which includes a $5000 prize.
You are invited to nominate one of your colleagues. The nomination should be no longer than two pages and should specifically include references to the faculty member’s

•Current additional or administrative duties
•Service to the off-campus community
•Particular effectiveness in the classroom and in personal contact with students
•Unusual dedication to the profession of teaching

Please email your nomination of a full-time faculty member to Ms. Nicole Bell (nbell2@austincc.edu) in the Professional Development & Evaluation Programs office by October 2, 2009. Nominations received after that date cannot be considered. Immediately after the nomination deadline, the Teaching Awards committee, made up of ACC faculty, will select ACC’s nominee.

Before you nominate anyone for this award, you must first secure his or her permission, and you must clearly state in the nomination that you have received the permission. Receiving permission is essential because completing the Piper nomination form requires much time and information gathering by both the nominee and either a dean or department chair.
ACC’s nominee must submit a Piper Professor Nomination application to the Piper Foundation by November 25, 2009. The Foundation will officially announce award winners by May 3, 2010.
To honor the nominee, regardless of selection by the Piper Foundation, the Professional Development and Evaluation Programs office will give the nominee a free registration to TCCTA’s Round-Up for Great Teaching in May 2010.
For more information and to view the nomination forms which the ACC nominee will be required to complete and submit to the Piper Foundation, you may go to http://www.window.state.tx.us/scholars/programs/ppnominationform.html. If you have any questions, please contact Terry Stewart Mouchayleh, Director of Professional Development & Evaluation Programs at 223-7748.

Professional Development

The deadline for completion of required professional development activities for the 08-09 academic year is August 31st. You may apply any professional development hours earned at General Assembly to either this past year or the new academic year, 09-10. Keep in mind that 100% of any hours you complete over your requirement will be rolled into the next academic year. Therefore, you will lose none of the hours you may have accumulated over your required amount. If you are a supervisor or administrative assistant and are entering any professional development hours for the academic year 08-09, you will need to complete the entries by September 11th. On that day, the database will close for that year and excess hours will be rolled into 09-10.

Records

Human Resources is pleased to announce that beginning in fall 2009, Austin Community College and other educational institutions nationwide will begin reporting ethnicity and race data for students and employees using the new requirements issued by the U.S. Department of Education.

For those employees that hire new hourly employees or adjunct faculty, you will be required to complete revised forms on new employees that are hired as of September 4, 2009.
