Rio Grande Campus Adaptive Reuse of Gymnasium

The Austin Community College District is undertaking a number of projects in the coming years to expand and improve our service to the community. What can neighbors expect? Construction sites are busy and at times disruptive. ACC will keep you informed with timely project updates.

Rio Grande Campus Gymnasium Adaptive Reuse
Currently unoccupied, plans are to transform the old Austin High School gymnasium (1218 West Avenue). Voters approved a 2003 bond package which includes funding to renovate the building that will house RGC faculty offices and some classrooms. Construction is expected to begin in January 2009. The facility (Building 3000) is scheduled to open fall 2010.

Status:
Plans are underway to transform the old Austin High School gymnasium on West Avenue.  An entire second floor will be added inside to provide more classrooms and faculty offices for ACC’s busiest campus.  The renovated building will provide more than 33,000 square feet to alleviate crowding at the Main Building and will ultimately house a new central plant for heating and cooling the entire campus.  The exterior appearance of the gymnasium will be maintained as faithfully as possible.  The adjacent Band Hall must be removed for technical and code demands on the property; it will, however, be replaced by a new landscaped courtyard. The interior of the existing gymnasium building has now been abated from all of the hazardous construction materials that were once commonly used.  Extensive testing of the site has been completed; this was necessary to confirm that the existing soils and foundations will support the proposed change to offices and classrooms.  The re-design of the old building has proved challenging but is nearly complete.  Construction will begin later this year, pending the successful completion of the City of Austin’s approval process.
